What is flotation therapy or floating?

Flotation therapy is simply floating in 10 inches of water with so much Epsom salts, that when you get in and lie on your back, you are pushed to the surface so you float like a cork, weightless as an astronaut in space without light and sound. It is the experience of nothing. In this state, your body begins to heal itself, your mind unwinds and expands, and you rejuvenate. Deep states of healing can be realized.

Floatation therapy was started in 1954 by the National Institutes of Health to study the brain. Current clinical research and media coverage have validated the benefits of floatation therapy as a way to reduce pain, focus and reprogram the mind and expand consciousness.

How does floatation therapy work?

A typical float session lasts 60 minutes. You float in water heated to skin temperature, saturated with therapeutic Epson salt (magnesium sulfate). The magnesium sulfate infused water not only provides you with needed key nutrients; it also detoxifies the body, sedates the nervous system and creates a level of weightlessness. The spine decompresses and pressure is taken off bones and joints. Swelling is reduced and blood flow increases, helping the muscle tissues repair and expedite overall healing. These components allow the body to relax and regenerate itself. It has been stated that one hour of floating is as restorative as four hours of deep sleep and equivalent to a 3-day detoxification cleanse.

Floating also minimizes sensory input into the brain and lowers brain wave activity creating patterns experienced during deep meditation. This initiates a profound surge of positive mental and physical effects by producing beneficial neurochemicals. Endorphins are released (the neurotransmitters of happiness), serotonin increases (mood elevating chemical), and the production of the bodies own opiates (natural pain killers) is stimulated. In addition, cortisol, blood pressure, heart rate, adrenaline and lactic acid levels decrease. What will it be like for me?

We don't know what it will be like for you since it is such an individual experience. The most common reports are profound peace and relaxation, deep concentration and creativity. We avoid saying too much before people float, so that they aren't influenced by what someone else says. Not only will it be different for you than it is for anyone else, it will be different each time.

Is it weird?

It is different. Your body is in an environment it probably hasn't been in since birth. So yes. It will take some getting used to. But what worth doing doesn't? And the more often you float, the better it gets.

What if I am claustrophobic?

Most claustrophobic people find it is quite easy to relax in the floatation chambers. Our nature is to relax when exposed to such a calm, quiet, almost womb-like environment. Once you're floating effortlessly, you lose any real sense of the size of the interior. For those that like a larger environment, we have 2 float cabins. Each is like a small room with light and music. They are 8’ long and have a 7’ high ceiling with an easy to open door. One cabin is the size of a queen bed and the other the size of a king bed. It’s large enough for 2 people to float. The cabins are well ventilated and you can leave or turn the lights on whenever you want. With all of our floatation chambers, you have complete control of your environment.

Do I need to float more than once?

Yes, if you want to make full use of the potential. Most people, but not all, get a sense of how floating can profoundly benefit them after 3 to 5 sessions. Those who glimpse the potential the first time, want to return again and again. Scientific studies have shown that floating has a cumulative effect. We are strong advocates of floating once a week or more at first. If you have less time, floating twice a month helps you maintain balance.

How long do people usually float?

We recommend a 90-minute float. However, we offer 60-minute floats to accommodate those with less time. For the first few sessions you might find the first 45 minutes is spent just letting go of your own body tension and mind chatter. This process shortens drastically over time and with multiple floats. Relaxing takes practice! Of course the "perfect" way to float is to stay in until you want to get out. If you book a 90 minute session please allow for a 2 hour appointment time total, if you book a 60 minute session please allow for a 90 minute appointment time total. The additional time is needed for showering and such.

Does floating really reduce pain and stress?

Yes. The positive effects of weightless and Epsom salts are stated above. Not only does your body relax and restore, but recent fMRI studies prove that the areas of the brain that are active during periods of anxiety show significant reduction in activity after floating, thus clinically showing that floating reduces anxiety.

How does floating help sports performance and recovery?

Flotation therapy has been shown to reduce lactic acid in the body by flushing it out of the muscles quicker. Muscle strengthening and growth actually happens when the body is relaxed. Flotation therapy provides some of the deepest relaxation possible. Athletes who use the tank in conjunction with visualization techniques have experienced rapid improvement in their sporting performances. As the brain enters the theta state, it becomes more open to suggestion. The central nervous system can essentially be trained to produce the ‘perfect performance’.

How does floating help with personal growth?

We say floating is for those who CAN meditate and those who CAN’T meditate. If you already meditate, then floating takes you deeper. If you have trouble meditating, like most, then floating takes you to a meditative state without effort. The benefits of meditation are proven. Combined with relaxation, weightlessness, silence, darkness and theta brain wave states, you can attain personal peace, balance, breakthroughs and insights. Some report peak personal experiences.

How does floating increase creativity and brain function?

Recent research indicates that floating increases the right brain functions of pattern recognition and rapidly absorbing large scale information. Floating allows the left brain hemisphere (the analytic part) to become quiet so the right brain can expand. In a zero sensory environment, combined with theta brain states, creativity can explode. Artists, writers, musicians, and chefs love to float.

Almost counter intuitively, this same mechanism helps sharpen the mind. Instead of opening to a creative space, one can use focus and intention to solve problems, explore alternatives, and even reprogram their thoughts and patterns. Is the water sanitary?

Yes. Floating is extremely sanitary. The best science right now says the water and highly dense salt environment does not support microbial, bacteriological or viral growth, especially at the high concentration present in the floatation chambers. The water is completely filtered three times between each float through our 1 micron filtration system (FDA compliant for drinking water) and with ozone and UV sterilization. Last, we also sterilize with food grade hydrogen peroxide. We do not use bromine or chlorine. The water is many times more sanitary than a swimming pool or spa. Correct levels are constantly monitored. Clients are required to thoroughly shampoo, soap, and rinse on-site before entering the floatation chamber. And we are always cleaning.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have longer hair, you may want to bring a hair tie and a brush. If you wear contacts, bring something to put them in as you do not want to get salt water on them. Other than that, we provide everything you need (towels, robes, earplugs, body wash/shampoo/conditioner, hair dryer and make up station). Our shampoo and body wash is scented (organic with essential oils). If that is not to your liking please feel free to bring your own. Since it is a private experience, you do not wear anything. Clothing presses against your body, becoming a distraction. Floating in the nude also helps us keep detergents and such from getting into the water. Each room has a locking door.

What should I do to prepare for my float session?

• Don’t ingest any stimulants (including coffee) for several hours beforehand.
• Don’t shave or wax 12 hours before you float since the salt water can sting your skin.
• Eating a light meal about 60 to 90 minutes ahead of time stops your stomach from making distracting noises while you float.
• You may want to limit liquids beforehand so you don't have to leave the tank for a bathroom break.
• Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled float so that we have time to go over the Pre- and Post-float instructions.

What effect does salt water have on my skin and hair?

The Epsom salt solution seems to be beneficial to the skin. We have listened to some opinions that say Epsom salt is very good for strengthening the hair. And after an hour or more in the floatation chamber, you won’t prune up.

Can I float during menstruation?

Yes. But we ask that you use sound practical wisdom with this decision, and follow the same procedure that you would at a swimming pool.

Can I float during pregnancy?

Yes. Floating is ideal for pregnant women as it alleviates pressure on the skeletal system and joints, and assists in relieving muscle tension. Many centers have reported that pregnant woman are some of the most satisfied customers. Some mothers report experiencing a deep connection with their child while floating -- even being able to hear the baby's heart beat. Of course, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor first.

Can I drown?

No. Not unless you lay face down in it, and are capable of tolerating the sting of the salt on the eyes, nose and mouth. Is it dangerous to sleep in the floatation chamber? No. It is safe to sleep in the chamber. The reason people think it may be dangerous is probably the fear of rolling over. Even those who say they never sleep on their backs in bed, sleep on their backs in the chamber. It is very difficult to roll over in the chamber because of the density of the solution, and if any of the salt solution gets in your eyes, mouth or nose, you would wake up immediately.

Who shouldn't float?

You should not float if any of the following conditions apply:

• Have cuts, open sores, rashes or active skin conditions
• Open wounds (Including active hemorrhoids, the salt can sting)
• Have incontinence issues
• Are presently ill
• Have any type of uncontrolled seizure disorder
• Lack the physical ability to enter and exit the chamber unassisted (Our deluxe float cabin is designed to be wheel chair accessible.) • Have kidney problems
• Recently colored or permed hair in the last 7 days
• High risk pregnancy
• Anyone with acute medical conditions should consult a doctor before floating.
• Anyone with tubes in their ears should consult a doctor before floating. However, wearing earplugs while floating is always recommended

Infrared Sauna vs. Traditional Sauna

Traditional (hot rock or steam) saunas operate at 180° to 200°F and warm the air and skin. Infrared saunas have the benefit of being effective at a more comfortable operating temperature of 100°-150°F. Because infrared heat penetrates human tissue vs. simply heating the surface of the skin, infrared saunas raise the body's core temperature and produce a sweat composed of 20% toxins vs. only 3% toxins with a traditional sauna. You sweat much less compared to a conventional sauna. Infrared therapy leaves you feeling invigorated, not depleted and sweaty.

What is Full Spectrum Infrared Therapy?

Infrared light is the invisible part of the sun's spectrum that does not contain harmful UV rays. 80% of the sun’s rays fall into the infrared range. It is the heat from the sun and also from a wood fire. It is even the same form of heat emitted by your own body.

Full Spectrum Infrared therapy combines Near, Short and Far Infrared wavelengths into one treatment. Full Spectrum heat penetrates 3” through the dermis to stimulate the tissues, muscles, organs, joints, causing an acceleration of blood flow, and increase in tissue healing, detoxification, cellular health and metabolism. Our sauna uses these 3 types of heat in 6 customized programs to create a more individualized experience based on your specific needs.

Near Infrared waves have a shorter frequency range and penetrate the epidermis layer of the skin. It a safe and optimal choice for skin rejuvenation, wound healing and skin health. With continued use it can reduce increase oxygenation of tissues, reduce wrinkles and crow’s feet, as well as improved overall skin tone, softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness. NASA concluded that NIR light significantly promotes faster cell regeneration, wound healing and human tissue growth. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology concluded that near infrared energy restores enzyme activity and reduces cell death by half.

Mid Infrared wavelengths penetrate deeper into the body’s soft tissue where inflammation occurs. It helps expand blood vessels and increases circulation so more oxygen can reach injured areas of the body. This reduces pain and inflammation.

Far Infrared is the ‘warm’ energy in humans, animals and plants. This is the heat we feel. Tests have shown that as much as 93% of the far infrared waves that reach our skin is absorbed. Far infrared provides relaxation, detoxification, weight loss, lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and reduces pain, stiffness, and fatigue.

How long is a typical session? And how often have I take a session?

Sessions can be customized to optimize cardio, detoxification, pain relief, relaxation, weight loss and skin health which will cause session length to vary. In general, most sessions last 30 to 45 minutes. Beginners start at 20 minutes and gradually increase time and temperature. Most people have a 30-45 minute session, 3-4 times a week, but it is safe to use every day and at whatever heat suits you best. With proper hydration, it is safe to do every day.

How does it detoxify me?

When the infrared light penetrates the body and converts to heat, this heat has the ability to melt the fats holding the toxins and also activate the detoxification mechanisms that purge the toxins through the skin. Infrared saunas have been clinically shown to raise core body temperature nearly 3 degrees, which leads to a truly detoxifying sweat. Subcutaneous fat can be released along with the sweat and toxins.

Environmental toxics are stored in fat cells. Tissues selectively absorb far infrared rays as the water in the cell reacts in a process called “resonant absorption”. Resonant absorption occurs when the frequency of the infrared waves matches the frequency of the water in the cell causing the toxins to be dropped off in the blood stream and excreted.

The sweat produced during infrared therapy is different from the sweat produced during an intense workout. When you sweat during exercise, your nervous system is in the sympathetic mode. During this “water sweat” you only lose electrolytes and water – not toxins. Regular infrared therapy moves the nervous system into a parasympathetic mode, stimulating a “fat-sweat” that helps eliminate the chemicals and toxins stored in the body.

Infrared therapy is one of the few ways to detoxify the body of heavy metals. Deep sweating reduces levels of lead, copper, zinc, aluminum, formaldehyde, nickel, mercury and chemical toxins commonly absorbed just from our daily environments. It would normally take your kidneys 24 hours or more to eliminate these metals.

How do I lose weight with an infrared sauna?

The far infrared increases the body’s internal temperature, melts fat and releases toxins while increasing heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, burning more calories, leading to more weight loss. Blood flow rises, increasing from 5-7 quarts up to 13 quarts a minute. The Journal of the American Medical Association, infrared sauna weight loss sessions were shown to burn up to 600 calories.

Does the infrared sauna strengthen the immune system?

Sick or diseased cells and bacteria have a lowered resistance to heat. A fever is a natural way for the body to increase its temperature to kill off these cells. The sauna increases the body’s temperature and further weakens these cells and bacteria. The heat also triggers the production of white blood cells and NK cells (Natural Killer) that seek out these weakened cells and bacteria and kill them. The result is a strengthened immune system. A sauna is a great way to head off a cold or the flu.

What is chromotherapy?

According to the National Institutes of Health, chromotherapy is a science of using colors to adjust body vibrations to frequencies that result in health and harmony. It is a centuries-old concept. Chromotherapy works to help balance your body via the full spectrum of visible light. Each color has specific frequencies and vibrations that corrspond to different physical symptoms. These lights are included in our sauna and can be used with music for additional vibrational healing.

Do the healing effects build over time?

What should I wear in the sauna? Can I go nude?

You can go nude if you would like, but be sure to put down towels to absorb your sweat. Men typically wear workout or swim trunks; women typically wear workout shorts and a tank top or sports bra. Most dress as if they are going to the gym. For 1-hour sessions, you may want to shower. Robes, slippers, towels, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel is provided.

What should I do to prepare for my infrared therapy session?

Hydrate with water or another hydrating drink before and after your session. You may bring a closed-lid container or water bottle to drink from in the sauna. Do not drink coffee, soda or other sugary or alcoholic beverages. Wait at least 1 – 2 hours after eating before beginning a infrared sauna session.

How many people can use the sauna at once?

Our sauna will fit 2 people seated comfortably. Sessions are private unless the client making the reservation decides to bring a guest. Please mention in the booking notes if a guest will be accompanying you.

Can I use the sauna for Hot / Bikram Yoga?

Yes, the heat from an infrared will cause the human body to heat up and become more flexible. Additionally, the sauna is large enough to provide room for stretching and postures.

Is it good to use the Sauna with Flotation Therapy?

Yes. To experience the maximum benefit of both therapies, we suggest a 30-minute sauna followed by a 60-90 minute float. The sauna opens the pores, allowing for greater absorption of magnesium -- the significant healing element found in Epsom salts. Most important is that you will relax and unwind during the sauna. Your time floating will be better and deeper because you will enter the tank relaxed and ready.

Is the infrared sauna safe?

Infrared heat is completely safe and all objects give off and receive infrared heat. It is so safe, hospitals use similar heaters to warm newborns. Infrared is a part of nature and essential for life. The human body gives off and receives far infrared energy constantly. There are, however, some conditions were you should consult a physician. See below.

Does infrared technology interfere with implants (metal, silicone, etc.)?

Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and thus are not heated by this system. Nevertheless, you should consult your physician prior to using an infrared sauna.

What are the contraindications for the Sauna?

It is best to consult your physician prior to use for the following conditions:

What is a BioMat?

The Bio-Mat is a Class II, FDA registered medical device. NASA patented the technology in the 1960's. The BioMat was created when it became public domain in 1997. Currently there is a great deal of research in Japan and Korea, and BioMats are used on the hospital beds there. It is still relatively new here, but doctors, hospitals, and alternative care practitioners are beginning to realize the benefits.

What does it feel like?

For many people their first experience of being on a BioMat is wonderful! The BioMat generates a deep nourishing warmth. Initially the BioMats’ surface temperature is cooler than other devices, however after a short time the heat becomes quite pervasive. If you have spent anytime sun bathing you will recognize the familiar soothing warm feeling.

For certain purposes, such as minor pain relief and mood improvement, results are almost immediate, once you determine the right settings and durations. Of course, results may vary depending on frequency of use, and the nature of the problem that you are treating.

How does the BioMat work?

The BioMat combines deep penetrating far infrared energy, amethyst and tourmaline crystals and positive ions to give pain relief and improve health.

The far infrared light operates the same as the sauna with the same benefits of relaxation, and reduction of joint/muscle pains, spasms, sprains, strains, stiffness, and fatigue. However, the BioMat’s far infrared waves penetrate 6” (which is deeper than the sauna) due of the amethyst. The BioMat can provide the detoxification, weight loss and cardio benefits and sweating like the sauna, but only at higher heats. We only use the high heat settings for short times.

Amethyst has long been used in the spiritual healing field, across different cultures, known as Medicine Stone, and referred to as ‘nature’s superconductor’, as it amplifies light waves and ions. Can I use the BioMat for an injury (or post-surgery)?

If there is still swelling from the injury, it is better to use cold to reduce the swelling and prevent further injury. Once the swelling has receded, heat and infrared therapy may support tissue repair. It is best to use the BioMat for 20-30 minutes, once or twice a day, for this purpose.

How is a BioMat different than a heating pad?

The heat from a Bio Mat is very different from heating pads. Because the Bio Mat uses far infrared light technology, the sensation of heat is generated from within the body. The heating pad heats your skin directly. Heating pads often cause 'hot spots' or 'burns' on the skin and sometimes even underlying muscle tissue. The effects of the heat dissipate within a few minutes.

A heating pad uses metallic coils to produce heat that actually emit harmful electromagnetic waves. When the body is exposed to these discordant electromagnetic waves, there can be a reduction in serotonin. What are negative ions?

Negative ions are oxygen atoms charged with an extra electron. They are created in nature by the effects of water, air, sunlight and the Earth’s inherent radiation. Negatively charged ions are most prevalent in natural places and particularly around moving water or after a thunderstorm. That taste in the air and feeling you get at the beach, near a waterfall or after a storm is your body being saturated in the benefits of negative ions. How do the negative ions from the BioMat help me?

Because BioMats generate and conduct negative ions directly, there is an immediate response in the body’s electrical fields. How does a BioMat compare to the Infrared Sauna?

The Bio-Mat can penetrate 6”-8” inches into the body. An infrared sauna penetrates about 2”. The sauna is used for higher heat therapy such as detoxification. The sauna also has 6 programs for different healing modalities. The sauna covers your whole body whereas the BioMat covers only part of your body while laying on it.

Can anyone use a BioMat?

Yes, the BioMat is safe for anyone on the lower and medium settings. The higher settings are safe for the vast majority of people, but there are some precautions involving heat.

Do people sleep on the BioMat?

Yes, many people do this. Most of the benefits are achieved by shorter, daytime “burst treatments”. Sleeping on the BioMat improves the quality and restfulness of the sleep. It works perfectly when sleeping during an acupuncture treatment.

How often and how long should I use the BioMat?

An effective treatment can be as short as 20 minutes, but you can usually get better results in 40-60 minutes. You can use it every day, up to twice a day, or just every few days. Intermittent use for a specific reason, such as relieving minor back pain, can also work well.

Is it safe to use the BioMat during pregnancy?

Yes. It is100% safe during pregnancy if the pregnant woman limits herself to the lowest 2-3 settings and then not for more than an hour. It can be great for relieving morning sickness, nausea, backaches and body pain.

Is it good to try a BioMat before floating?

Yes, we highly recommend it, especially for new floaters. Simply resting on the BioMat for as little as 30 minutes will greatly improve your float by reducing stress before floating. This will help you relax and more quickly enter a deeper state in the tank.

Is BioMat covered by my Insurance or FSA (Flexible Spending Account)?

We do not accept insurance and have only heard that generally, the BioMat is not covered by insurance. However, with a physician's prescription, it may be.

BioMat is covered under your FSA plan because it is an FDA registered medical device.

How hot does it get?

The BioMat has a wide range of temperature setting to accommodate all clients. There are 5 temperature setting:

What are the contraindications for the BioMat?

You can always use the BioMat on the lower heat settings. But for higher heat settings, it is best to consult your physician prior to use for the following conditions:
• Acute injury within the last 48 hours
• Brain tumor
• Diabetes
• Difficulties in perspiring
• Dizziness
• Fainting spells
• Heart bypass surgery
• Heart or vascular condition
• Heat sensitivity
• Hemophiliacs or persons prone to bleeding
• High blood pressure
• Infections or fever
• Insensitivity to heat
• Internal Pacemaker / Defibrillator
• Radiation Therapy/Chemotherapy
• Uncontrolled seizures
